Chennai: Soon after Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan announced the news of having twin boys earlier this month, it was apparent that their birth was through surrogacy.
Questions were raised whether the celebrity couple violated surrogacy laws in having the twins within four months of their wedding, with Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian setting up a panel to investigate the matter.
On Wednesday, the panel — headed by two paediatric doctors — submitted its report which stated that all guidelines had been followed by the couple.
Even though Nayanthara and Vignesh Sivan tied the knot in a grand ceremony on June 9, 2022, they had got legally married on March 11, 2016, according to a statement released by the state’s Health department.
According to the inquiry committee’s report, the couple had submitted all documents as per ICMR rules. The surrogate mother is a married woman with a child, which is the guideline to be a surrogate.
The embryo was formed in August 2020, and preserved at the hospital. The necessary documents were signed by the surrogate in November 2021. The embryo was planted inside the surrogate mother in March 2022 and she delivered twin boys through C-section in October.
However, the inquiry found that the private hospital didn’t properly maintain documents and records of the treatment and medical condition of the surrogate mother.
Hence, a notice has been sent to the hospital seeking explanation as to why it should not be temporarily closed for not maintaining documents as required by ICMR.
