Guwahati: Around 40,000 kg of drugs was destroyed in the north-eastern states on Saturday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
It was preceded by a regional meeting on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ Shah had with CMs and DGs of all north-eastern states, to push “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve of a drug-free India.”
According to the Home Minister’s Office, the drugs were seized as part of a mega drive carried out by Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
Shah, who was in Assam today, virtually monitored the destruction of drugs from Guwahati.
Drugs weighing around 11,000 kg were confiscated in Assam, 8000 kg in Arunachal Pradesh, 4000 kg in Meghalaya, 1600 kg in Nagaland, 398 kg in Manipur, 1900 kg in Mizoram, 1500 kg in Tripura and 12,000 kg in Tripura, the Home Minister tweeted.
“In Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a decision was taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs to destroy 75,000 kg of drugs under the aegis of Narcotics Control Bureau. I am happy that instead of 75,000 kg, 150,000 kg of drugs were destroyed. It is a big achievement,” Shah said.
NCB had decided to run a special campaign over 75 days to destroy 75,000 kg of drugs by all its regional units. The target, however, was achieved in 60 days.
