NEET & JEE: Six Non-BJP States Move Supreme Court To Postpone Exams

New Delhi: Six opposition-ruled states have filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against its August 17 order that allowed the Centre to hold the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in September.

The joint petition filed by West Bengal, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Punjab contended that the top court has ignored the logistical difficulties in conducting the examinations at the proposed dates amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The petitioners also appealed to the SC to consider the postponement of the exams to “secure the safety, security and right to life of the students — candidates appearing for the NEET/JEE exams”.

The decision to move the top court was taken during a meeting of the chief ministers of opposition-ruled states that was convened by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday.

Earlier on August 17, the SC had dismissed another petition to postpone these entrance exams to engineering and medical colleges. A crucial year of students “cannot be wasted” and “life has to go on”, the court had said in the order.
