New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday stepped up its attack on the Centre after the Delhi Police booked Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over allegations that they entered Akashvani Bhawan without authorisation during an opposition protest.
The party described Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah as a “diabolical duo” and accused them of being “nervous, rattled and desperate”.
“The diabolical duo is nervous, rattled and desperate. The writing on the wall is clear,” Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.
The police action followed a complaint alleging that Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, their supporters and other MPs accompanying them forcibly entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises, officials said.
The Congress leaders were among around 260 people detained on Tuesday after an INDIA bloc protest continued for more than eight hours inside the premises, as reported by The New Indian Express.
The protesters were opposing alleged irregularities in the functioning of the poll panel under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Reacting to the FIR, Ramesh alleged that Rahul Gandhi had spent nearly two years using “factual evidence” to expose what he termed a “Vote Chori conspiracy” involving the prime minister, the home minister and the Chief Election Commissioner.
“For almost two years now the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been relentlessly exposing, through factual evidence, the Vote Chori conspiracy hatched between the PM & the HM on one side and the CEC on the other,” Ramesh said.
He further alleged that “crores of genuine voters” had been deprived of their constitutional right to vote through what he called the “atrocious” SIR process.
Ramesh expanded the abbreviation SIR as “Shahenshah Instigated Removal” and criticised the police action against the Congress leaders.
“And when the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha adopts the method of satyagraha to highlight the injustices of SIR, the Delhi Police registers an FIR against him and other leaders,” he said.
Ramesh later told PTI that Rahul Gandhi was fighting against SIR while the “diabolical duo” was engaged in filing FIRs.
