New Delhi: A sample of Nestle’s ‘Low Fat Dairy Whitener’ has been declared unsafe and substandard following a laboratory analysis conducted under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The sample was collected from Bharat Hotels Ltd (The Lalit) in Connaught Place, New Delhi, according to a notice shared by FSSAI.
The Food Analyst laboratory of the country’s food safety regulator found Nestle’s popular product non-compliant under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
FSSAI communicated the findings to the food business operator, and directed it to immediately prohibit the sale of the identified product.
FSSAI also issued a notice to Bharat Hotels Ltd in connection with the non-compliant product sample.
The company has been allowed to challenge the adverse report within the prescribed period under the applicable provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Consumers have been advised to follow official updates and verify product information before purchasing or consuming affected batches.
Nestle says product is ‘safe to consume’
Nestle issued a statement stating its low fat dairy whitener complies with all regulatory requirements.
“Nestlé Low Fat Dairy Whitener is safe to consume and complies with all applicable regulatory requirements. Phosphorus is a nutrient that occurs naturally in milk and is therefore present in all milk-based products,” Nestle said.
“FSSAI lab reports reflect total phosphorus against the additive limit, without accounting for the substantial natural phosphorus contribution from milk-based ingredients. Our product is in full compliance for added phosphorus as per prescribed limits under FSSR including for as consumed basis. We have been in continuous engagement with the authorities as per due process established under law and have shared data across other same/similar milk-based products in the category to reflect presence of naturally occurring phosphorous,” the company added.
