Netflix Lands In Trouble With #BombayBegums; Know The Trending Controversy

Mumbai: The hash-tag #BombayBegums was trending on Twitter on Friday, a day after Nextflix was served a notice by a national commission for children.

In its notice issued on Thursday, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) asked the OTT major to stop streaming the series ‘Bombay Begums’ citing what it called “inappropriate portrayal” of children in the web series.

The NCPCR also asked Netflix to furnish a detailed action report within 24 hours, failing which it would be “constrained to initiate appropriate legal action”.

Objecting to the alleged inappropriate portrayal of children in the series, the commission said such content could “pollute young minds” and could also result in abuse and exploitation of children.

The commission took action based on a complaint which alleged that the series normalises minors indulging in casual sex and drug abuse.

‘Bombay Begums’ delves into the lives of five women from different sections of society who all want different things in life, NDTV reported.

Earlier, Amazon had triggered a controversy with its series ‘Tandav’ for allegedly mocking Hindu deities. Many cases were filed against the OTT platform, the makers of the series and actors for this.
