Dibrugarh: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he was really ashamed after a businessman committed suicide following constant threats from the mafia.
The CM, who visited the 32-year-old Vineet Bagaria’s Dibrugarh house on Saturday, apologized to his grieving parents for the failure of the local administration.
“I’ve never been more ashamed in my life that such an incident could happen when I am serving as the chief minister. It has hurt me a lot. I apologize to his parents and the people of the state,” he said.
“It was a total failure of the Dibrugarh district administration,” Biswa Sarma said.
Coming down heavily on the police, Biswa Sarma remarked that the state government’s repeated requests to cops to act as a friend of the public went unheard in this case.
“If police personnel in a place such as Dibrugarh cannot understand our appeal and act accordingly, how can we expect those posted in rural areas to even hear our words?” the CM said.
In a video recorded before he took his own life, Bagaria claimed that he was threatened by three people, including the tenant of a shop owned by his family.
The Bagaria family had submitted written complaints to Dibrugarh police about the threats, but there was allegedly no response.
Two of the people named in Bagaria’s video have been arrested.
