New Delhi: The Supreme Court issued notices to WhatsApp and Facebook over the new privacy policy of the world’s largest messaging service.

“You may be $2-3 trillion companies but people value their privacy and it is the court’s duty to protect their privacy,” a Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, told the social network and its messaging service.

The bench, hearing an interim application filed by Karmanya Singh Sareen in a pending petition of 2017, has also issued notice to the Centre, seeking responses from the Union government and the messaging app within four weeks on a fresh plea alleging lower standards of privacy for Indians in comparison to European users of the messaging app.

The apex court observed that people have grave apprehensions of losing their privacy, adding that they value privacy more than the value of the company.
