Kampala: A chaotic stampede during New Year celebrations at a popular mall in Uganda’s capital left at least nine people dead, including children, police said.
The stampede took place at Freedom City Mall as revellers rushed to watch fireworks, reported AP.
According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident appeared to have occurred at midnight “when an event emcee encouraged attendees to go outside and watch a fireworks display.”
Five people died at the spot while four others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital where they were rushed to.
A number of people were reported to be seriously injured and fighting for their lives.
Katwe Territorial Police are investigating an incident of “rash behaviour and neglect”, an official statement said. Police are yet to make any arrest.
