Balangir: A newborn has allegedly gone missing from the special newborn care unit (SNCU) of Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital (BBMCH) in Odisha’s Balangir.
Police have begun a probe after the family members of the missing baby lodged a complaint at BBMCH police outpost.
Sushil Swain of Baradipadar village of Boudh had admitted his wife to the obstetrics and gynecology department of the hospital on Thursday evening. His wife gave birth to a baby boy through C-section on Friday morning. On the doctors suggestion, the newborn was admitted to the SNCU of the hospital. But when family members went to the SNCU at 1 pm on Friday to enquire about the baby, they were told the newborn had already been handed over to the family.
“I had handed over the baby to the SNCU staff in the morning,” said Sushil’s sister who was attending to her sister-in-law.
Hospital Superintendent Dr Manasi Parhi said she was in a meeting and has just been informed about it. “This should not have happened. Footages from CCTV camera installed outside the SNCU will be checked. A relative of the newborn could have taken the baby,” she said.
The incident shocked many as BBMCH was given the Chief Minister’s Award for Excellence in Health Services on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, CCTV footage of the man who took the baby has been shared by the Hospital Superintendent but Sushil’s sister says she does not recognise the person.
