Balasore: A newly married woman was allegedly set on fire by her husband and parents in-law at Chilapada village under Remuna tehsil under Nilagiri police limits in Balasore district on Tuesday.
The victim has been identified as Sweety Barik, daughter of Brajendra Barik of Bikhapada village in the district.
According to information, the woman’s husband identified as Muktikant Das of Chilapada village under Remuna block in the district and her in-laws set her on fire by pouring kerosene on her body after she refused to fulfill their demand of bringing a gold chain from her parents.
She ran out of her house in a half-burnt state screaming for help. She was rescued by neighbours who immediately rushed her to the Nilagiri Community Health Centre in a critical condition.
Doctors at the hospital said the woman’s condition is stable and she sustained about 60 percent burn injuries.
According to sources, the woman got married three months ago. A few days after marriage, her husband and in-laws started pestering her on several occasions to bring a gold chain from her parents as dowry.
