Bhubaneswar: A postgraduate student of Utkal University in Bhubaneswar has made an allegation of sexual harassment against a senior professor.
According to sources, the girl student has lodged a complaint with the university’s sexual harassment cell following the incident which allegedly took place in the chamber of the senior professor. The incident reportedly took place on Aug 16.
University sources said that the internal complaint committee (ICC) has been asked to investigate into the allegation made against the professor.
The probe is underway and the committee will submit its report to the university authorities on Tuesday, they said.
While students of the university have expressed anger over the incident, a rights activist has moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking action on the matter. The Commission has acknowledged receipt of the complaint.
Stating that senior Economics Professor at Utkal University molested the student in his chamber on August 16, the petitioner said the university authorities have not taken any initiative to investigate or take action against the erring professor despite a complaint lodged by the girl.
The petitioner further alleged that the victim is receiving regular threats to withdraw the complaint and there has been gross violation of the victim’s right to life, dignity, and bodily autonomy under Article 14, 19(1)(a), and 21 of the Indian Constitution.
Alleging negligence and callousness of the university authorities, petitioner Jayanta Kumar Das sought impartial Investigation by an independent committee and legal action against the erring professor and compensation Rs 5,00,000 to the victim.
He also sought legal action against the appropriate authorities of Utkal University and immediate installation of CCTV cameras in all the chambers of Professors.
