New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Odisha DGP, seeking a detailed report within two weeks in connection with the alleged attack on a journalist by a drug addict in Nabarangpur district.
Sumit Kumar Ghanta was stabbed in his abdomen and chest by an alleged drug-addict at Papadahandi on August 29 night while he was returning home from Nabarangpur. He was rushed to Papadahandi Community Health Centre and later shifted to district headquarters hospital (DHH) here from where he was referred to a hospital in Visakhapatnam for advanced treatment.
Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report on the alleged attack, the apex human rights body observed that the contents, if true, raise serious concerns of human rights violations. “The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Accordingly, it has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Odisha, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks,” it said.
The NHRC added that the report is expected to include the status of the investigation as well as the health condition of the injured journalist.
