New Delhi: Multiple teams of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at several locations in five states and one Union Territory in connection with a terror conspiracy case linked to ISIS and other outfits. Several electronic devices and other items were seized.

According to a NIA release, 21 locations were extensively searched in the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The NIA took over the case from Kayar police in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu in June this year. During the searches, several digital devices, including mobile phones, along with incriminatory documentary materials were seized,” the statement said.

“This particular case started with the arrest of one Akhlathur @Mohammed Akhlque Mujahid, who had allegedly conspired with others to commit terrorist acts in India. The conspiracy was aimed at gathering men and material support to wage jihad against India by joining forces with proscribed terrorist organisations,” it added.

The accused was apparently in contact with these terror outfits through social media platforms, as per NIA investigations. He was further found to have connections with multiple entities in Pakistan, and Syria.

Save for recruiting people for activities in other countries, ISIS was not known to be too active in India till recently. Things have now changed with the global terror outfit planning operations in India.

In the past, the NIA has busted an ISIS sleeper module in Pune, involved in the fabrication of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Two members of the module, absconding for more than two years, were extradited to India from Indonesia in May this year.
