Konark: Director General of Police (DGP) Rajendra Prasad Sharma on Friday placed Nimapara IIC Mrutyunjay Swain under suspension for allegedly thrashing an elderly woman at the police station on May 7.
Swain was transferred to Puri district police headquarters on Thursday till completion of investigation into the case. On the other hand, an SDPO has been given charge of Nimapara police station.
The accused officer had allegedly beaten up a 74-year-old woman for repeatedly visiting the police station. The woman had sustained injuries on her leg.
The matter came to the fore after a video clip featuring the same went viral on Tuesday.
According to information, the woman, identified as Basanti Palata of Dhirapur Dalei Sahi, had gone to the police station after being called up by the IIC concerned basing on a complaint lodged by her daughter-in-law Rita, alleging torture by in-laws.
The police officer, however, had refuted the allegations levelled against him.
