Bhadrak: The district administration sealed nine liquor shops at Basudevpur area in Bhadrak district under pressure from women activists on Wednesday.
According to sources, the women activists had been opposing the illegal liquor trade at Bideipur Bazaar under Basudevpur block here for several months. But the Excise Department did not take any action, they alleged.
A few back, a women’s organisation had submitted a written complaint with the Collector, demanding action against bootleggers. It said it would stage an agitation if the administration fails to act against the liquor traders.
However, hundreds of women blocked Basudevpur-Dhamara Road for four hours on Wednesday, following which, nine illegal shops were sealed immediately.
Basudevpur IIC Umashankar Nayak and other police officers were present.
