New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the curative petition of two death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case, paving the way for their hanging along with two other convicts.
A division bench of Justices NV Ramana, Arun Mishra, RF Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan unanimously declared that there was no merit in the curative petitions of convicts Vinay Kumar Sharma and Mukesh Singh seeking reconsideration of the death sentence awarded to them.
The two had filed a curative petition in SC after a Delhi court issued a death warrant against them and announced January 22 as the date of execution.
Besides them, two other convicts named Pawan and Akshay are slated to be executed at 7 am on the same day at Tihar Jail in Delhi.
Notably, they were convicted and sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old woman inside a moving bus in the national capital on the night of December 16, 2012.
The victim, who was given the name Nirbhaya, had later succumbed in a Singapore hospital where she was airlifted for medical treatment.
