New Delhi: Vinay Sharma, one of the Nirbhaya death row convicts, allegedly attempted to hurt himself by banging his head against a wall in his cell.
The incident took place on February 16, sources in the Tihar Jail said.
Earlier this week, Vinay’s lawyer had told the court that the convict was on hunger strike. He had also claimed that his client sustained head injuries after being assaulted in the jail.
Since he was suffering from acute mental illness, his lawyer had argued that the death sentence cannot be carried out. Following which, the court directed the Tihar jail superintendent to take appropriate care of Vinay in accordance with law.
On Monday, a Delhi court had issued fresh death warrants for March 3 at 6 am against Vinay (26), Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25) and Akshay Kumar (31). It is for the third time that the death warrants were issued against them.
