Nirbhaya Rape Case: SC Upholds Death Sentence For 3 Convicts

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the death verdict for the four convicts in the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder case after rejecting their review petition.

Earlier on May 5, 2017, the apex court had upheld the death sentences, following which, the convicts had filed a review petition.

A bench comprising, Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan, delivered the judgment on the pleas of Mukesh (29), Pawan Gupta (22) and Vinay Sharma (23).

However, the four death row convict, Akshay Kumar Singh (31), did not file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s May 5, 2017 order.

Nirbhaya Gang Rape Case

  1. Nirbhaya and her male were waiting for an autorickshaw bus after watching a movie at night of December 16, 2012.
  2. The two friends were waiting at Munirka in South Delhi when an off-duty charter bus, with six male occupants, including the driver, stopped by and offered them a ride.
  3. The bus moved in a direction which was off the route. When the male friend objected, He was shouted down. Later, he was knocked down with an iron rod.
  4. The six men in the bus, who were drunk, started molesting Nirbhaya. Shockingly, one among them was juvenile.
  5. As her friend lay half unconscious, the drunk men dragged Nirbhaya to the rear end of the moving bus and raped her. Nirbhaya was gang-raped in the bus.
  6. One of the attackers also inserted a rod into her private parts.
  7. The attackers then threw the two out of the moving bus. A passerby found the two laying half dead and informed Delhi Police.
  8. Doctors at the Safdarjung Hospital found the woman with only five per cent intestines.
  9. Battling for life, Nirbhaya breathed her last on December 29. Her friend survived after being treated for broken ribs.
  10. The accused identified as, Ram Singh, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Gupta, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur and a juvenile, were nabbed.
  11. Ram Singh, the bus driver, committed suicide in Tihar Jail during the trial.
  12. The juvenile, who was sent to a correction home, was released after serving a three-year term.
