NIT Prof, Wife Found Dead Inside Campus Quarters

Rourkela: An assistant professor of National Institute of Technology (NIT) and his wife were found dead inside a room of their on-campus quarters on Saturday morning.

Police said the deceased couple—R Jaybalan (38), assistant professor of Life Science and his 35-year-old wife Malini Keshavan—had been staying in the first-floor quarters (FR-A/102) on the NIT premises since their marriage nine years ago.

NIT staff noticed something amiss when the couple did not come out of their quarters for two days and informed the institute security in-charge, Suman Dutta, and the Registrar.

Later, a police team led by additional SP NC Swain along with a forensic team and dog squad went to NIT. They broke the front door of the quarters in the presence of an executive magistrate.

Police later found the body of the couple lying on the cot. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the couple has committed suicide. Besides, a four-page suicidal note was also found inside the room.

The additional SP refused to divulge details about the cause of death. The investigation was underway and it would be premature to tell anything about the matter now, he said.

A security guard of the institute told the media that he had last seen the couple outside their quarters on the evening of August 14.

The neighbours said there was no quarrel between Jalan and his wife who had no children.

Meanwhile, police have informed the parents about the death of their son. They are expected to arrive here from Tamil Nadu in the afternoon.
