Kolkata: The Public Enterprises Selection Board has picked Soma Mondal as the next chairperson of public sector steel major Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).
Her appointment, however, is subject to approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
The Cabinet approval would make her the first woman chairperson of SAIL.
Mondal, who is serving as Director (Commercial) of SAIL since September 2018, will also create history as she would then become the first woman to head a major steel company not only in India but also elsewhere in the world.
Anil Chaudhary, the current chairman of the SAIL who took charge in September 2018, is due to retire by the end of this year.
A graduate in Electrical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, Mondal also served as Director (Commercial), NALCO, Bhubaneswar, where she started her career as an engineer trainee and was involved in various project implementation activities as a part of the Technology Cell.
