London: Under-pressure British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will face a no-confidence vote in his leadership of the Conservative Party on Monday evening.
The vote, triggered by disgruntled Conservative MPs, was announced today days after more details of the Partygate scandal emerged, reported PTI.
Sir Graham Brady, in-charge of collating the letters of no-confidence, said that the threshold of 15 per cent of Tory parliamentary party, or 54 MPs, seeking such a vote has been met and so the motion will be placed in House of Commons.
Several Tory MPs had been publicly calling for the 57-year-old Johnson’s resignation as party leader over Partygate — COVID law-breaking parties — at Downing Street two years ago.
The inquiry report, revealing leadership failures, was released after a Scotland Yard investigation which led to Johnson and wife Carrie being fined for a lockdown-breaching birthday party in the Cabinet Room of Downing Street in June 2020.
The report exposed misconduct within government offices during 2020-2021 lockdowns to control the spread of coronavirus.
Johnson will be ousted from 10 Downing Street if more than half vote to oust him.
Johnson became PM in July 2019, replacing Theresa May, after winning the UK’s Conservative Party leadership contest.
In December 2020, Conservative Party won the general election, paving the way for Johnson to pass his Brexit deal and take the UK out of European Union.
