New Delhi: The government has not yet taken a final decision on whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York next month, officials said on Wednesday.
The provisional list of speakers released by the UN includes the Indian head of government for September 26, suggesting that the Prime Minister is expected to address the session. However, officials indicated that the decision on Modi’s participation will be taken closer to the date.
The 79th session of the UNGA will take place from September 23 to 29, with the US President scheduled to deliver the opening address on September 23. India’s slot is currently listed for September 26.
Speculation about the Prime Minister’s foreign travel plans has also intensified amid reports that he may visit the US in September. Some reports have suggested the possibility of a meeting between Modi and former US President Donald Trump, though there is no official confirmation on this.
Officials said the inclusion of India in the UN’s provisional schedule does not confirm Modi’s attendance, as the list is often subject to change. A final decision will be announced after internal consultations, they added.
