Jagatsinghpur: Gram panchayat elections will not be held in Dhinkia next month, when the rest of Odisha goes to polls. The terms of the sarpanch and 23 ward members are yet to be over in Dhinkia.
The panchayat polls in Dhinkia will be held in May 2024.
After a delay of over two years because of the agitation against the POSCO steel plant, the polls were held on May 27, 2019. BJD’s Kishore Chandra Parida was elected the sarpanch. The party also won several ward member posts.
Dhinkia has been in news lately.
JSW has proposed a steel plant in Dhinkia and adjoining areas for which land acquisition and providing compensation to affected villagers is going on.
Last week, violence erupted in the village after police and villagers opposed to giving up their land for the proposed plant clashed with the police. The issue has snowballed into a political controversy with the Opposition parties accusing the BJD-led Odisha government of police brutality against villagers.
