No Salary Cap For Indian Coaches; 4-Year Contracts On Offer

New Delhi: The central government is all set to remove the salary cap of Rs two lakh for Indian coaches on duty with elite athletes, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Saturday.

“Several Indian coaches are showing very good results and need to be rewarded for their hard work. The government is also keen to attract the best coaching talent from across the country to train our elite athletes and we do not want the cap on compensation to be a deterrent for good coaches to join,” said the Sports Minister.

According to Rijiju, the central government has also decided to hand longer contracts to the coaches to ensure continuity of coaching in one Olympic cycle for the elite athletes.

Also, renowned coaches already employed with various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) would be given green signal to join on deputation in order to be eligible for the four-year contracts, besides a higher salary structure.

Ex-elite athletes’ performance as an athlete as well as coach will determine their remuneration. All contracted coaches will be training at the SAI’s National Centre of Excellence and will be shortlisted jointly by the Sports Ministry and National Sporting Federations for the revamped pay structure.
