Bhubaneswar: Hours after Vinesh Phogat announced retirement from wrestling, former Indian Hockey Captain Viren Rasquinha on Thursday issued a personal statement, answering possible queries on her disqualification saga at Paris Olympics.
Taking to his X handle, he wrote: “Vinesh and the entire team that worked with her are devastated with the disqualification from the Paris Olympics. I have tried to answer some questions that have been asked to me since yesterday morning.”
While ruling out any scope of sabotage, the Olympian also quashed the theory that Vinesh could have retained the silver medal by declaring herself as injured or unfit for the finals in the 50kg category.
Veteran Indian boxer Vijender Singh had earlier alleged that the wrestler was a victim of a ‘conspiracy’ while claiming that top-tier athletes like her are adept at managing their weight before major events.
