No Security Breach, Says Police After Youth Takes Mother Hostage Near Odisha Assembly

Bhubaneswar: Minutes after a youth threatened to kill her mother with a knife near the State Assembly, the Commissionerate Police on Thursday tweeted that there was no security breach as the incident took place outside the high-security zone.

Stating that the youth had psychiatric ailments, Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash said he will be sent to the Psychiatry Department of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further treatment.

Praising the efforts of the police officers who showed patience and rescued the woman, he said they will be suitably encouraged for patience and professionalism.

Sources said that the parents of the youth of Kharmasahi panchayat in Daspalla block in Nayagargh were arrested and sent to jail in a murder case in 2014.

Protesting against their arrest,  he had written several letters to the minister concerned and the state police headquarters, claiming that his parents are innocent and the police had let off the prime accused following pressure from an influential political leader.

When his grievances were not heard, he lost his mental balance and had since been undergoing treatment, the sources added.
