Bhubaneswar: Eight persons including gangster Raja Acharya were arrested on extortion charge from Twin City in 24 hours. While 3 persons were arrested in Cuttack on Friday night, Raja and four others were arrested in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
In a joint operation, the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police and Khandagiri Police arrested four persons for allegedly extorting money from long-route buses at Baramunda bus terminal in Bhubaneswar.
The accused were identified as Dipak Behera, Soumya Ranjit Swain and Bharat Pradhan of Baramunda and Ashok Swain of Rayagada. They were collecting Rs 2000 from drivers of each long-route buses.
The police also seized an SUV, five cellphones and Rs 1 lakh in cash from their possession.
On Friday, Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi had informed that a special drive called “No To Extortion” was launched in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to put an end to the collection of extortion money by criminals.
