Mumbai: Concerned with the safety of children and rising coronavirus cases in India, an online campaign asking schools to reopen only when vaccines are available is doing the rounds.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday announced that schools and colleges would stay closed till June 30 and would reopen after that in consultation with all stakeholders, including parents.
This petition ‘No vaccine, no school’ on change.org has amassed over 3 lakh signatures in 24 hours, demanding that schools be reopened only after there are zero COVID19 cases in a state.
The petition signed by around 3.04 lakh parents across India shows that parents are unwilling to send their children to school till the situation is normalized and are fine with online classes till then.
The petition read, “Opening of schools in July will be the worst decision by the government. It’s like playing with fire when we ought to douse it with full force. The current academic session should continue in e-learning mode. If the schools claim that they are doing a good job via virtual learning then why not continue it for the rest of the academic year.”
