Stockholm: American poet Louise Glück was on Thursday awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for 2020.
“The 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded to the American poet Louise Glück for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal,” the Twitter feed of Nobel Prize announced.
Louise Glück’s maiden collection ‘Firstborn’ was published in 1968. But it was her second collection of poems, ‘The House on Marshland’, in 1975 which established her as a formidable literary figure.
She has been consistently writing poems, responding to the times we live in with her written word, and is acclaimed as one of the most prominent poets in American contemporary literature.
Glück has published twelve collections of poetry and some volumes of essays on poetry. ‘The Wild Iris’ (1992) is one of her most lauded work.
Born in 1943 in New York, Glück lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is a professor of English at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
