Noida: A police constable was shot dead and several others injured during a raid in Ghaziabad to arrest a criminal. The incident occurred at a village in Masuri. The police have launched a search for the accused.
According to an official, the police team from the Phase-3 police station in Noida was carrying out a raid at the Nahal village to arrest a criminal named Qadir, when locals ambushed it. There was stone-pelting and indiscriminate firing by the mob.
“Constable Saurabh Singh suffered a bullet injury to his head. He was rushed to the Yashoda Hospital nearby, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” an official said.
Such was the ferocity of the attack that the police team had to retreat before bringing in reinforcements. By then Qadir and his associates had managed to escape.
“An FIR has been registered and we have got several leads about those involved in the violence. They will be arrested soon. The search for Qadir and his associates is also underway,” the official added.
The dead constable’s body has been handed over to his family after an autopsy. He will be accorded a funeral with full honours and his next of kin will receive compensation, the police said.
