Noida’s Twin Towers Set For Demolition Today In ‘Waterfall Implosion’

New Delhi: Taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar, Supertech’s twin towers in Noida are all set to be demolished at 2.30 pm on Sunday. The towers in Noida’s Sector 93A are nearly 100-metre tall.

The towers have been rigged with more than 3,700-kg explosives and will be brought down by a technique called ‘waterfall implosion’. The structures will come down in a manner that there is no structural damage to nearby buildings.

The implosion is likely to trigger vibrations in a 30-metre radius similar to an earthquake measuring 0.4 on the Richter scale. Noida’s structures are designed to withstand earthquakes measuring up to 6 on the Richter scale.

The collapse will last nine seconds and a further 12 minutes for the dust to settle, the project engineer was quoted in media reports as saying. About 55,000 tonnes of debris will be generated.

Around 5,000 residents of Emerald Court, where the towers are located, and adjoining neighbourhoods in Sector 93A have been asked to vacate their premises in view of the demolition.

“Around 560 police personnel, 100 reserve police personnel, QRT and NDRF teams have been deployed. Traffic will be diverted during the demolition,” DCP (Central) Rajesh S told ANI.

Traffic on the nearby Greater Noida Expressway will be stopped from 2.15 pm to 2.45 pm. Diversions will be in place on roads leading to the twin towers.

The Supreme Court ordered the demolition of the towers for violation of norms.
