Koraput: Normal life was paralysed in Odisha’s Koraput on Tuesday due to a dawn-to-dusk shutdown called by Congress accusing the Centre and the state government of neglecting the district.
Shops, business establishments, offices and educational institutions remained closed owing to the 12-hour bandh called by Koraput district Congress.
As vehicular movement came to a grinding halt, the roads wore a deserted look. Public transport vehicles were off the road causing immense problems for the commuters.
Congress workers led by senior leader and Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati resorted to picketing at several places.
Tight security arrangements were made throughout the district to prevent any untoward incident during the bandh, police said.
The effect of the bandh was felt across the district, particularly in Sunki, Chandili, Kotpad, Borigumma, Jeypore, Lamtaput and Pottangi areas.
Sources said hundreds of vehicles were stranded on National Highway No. 26 as the agitators blocked the main traffic intersection of the highway.
The demands of the protesters include establishment of a Central School at Jeypore, employment opportunities for local youths, appointment of youths of the district to various vacant posts of the local administration and reopening of the B.Ed college in Koraput.
They also demanded steps to set up a Central Driving Training Research Center at Jeypore.
