Seoul: North Korea on Tuesday blew up a joint liaison office with South Korea near the border town of Kaesong.
Tension escalated between the sides after North Korea renewed threats of military action at the border. This was promoted by increased propaganda material sent across the border by defectors, the North alleged.
The destroyed site was inside North Korea’s territory and was opened in 2018 to help both countries communicate. The two Koreas are technically in a state of war since 1953 as no peace treaty has been signed yet.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong had threatened to demolish the office in a statement over the weekend.
She also threatened to send troops into the demilitarized zone (DMZ) at the border.
