Bhubaneswar: Odisha may continue to experience thunderstorm activity till April 10, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.
An orange warning has been issued for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak on April 6, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak Jajpur and Cuttack on April 7 and Mayurbhanj and Balasore on April 8. These districts are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds with speed of 50-60 kmph in the afternoon/evening hours.
Strong wind during this period may damage plantation, horticulture, standing crops and vulnerable structures. People have been advised to keep watch on weather and take shelter during thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning and follow traffic advisories in urban areas. “Also harvesting of crops may be regulated judicially and farmers in these districts are advised to use hail nets to protect vegetables and crops from hail, it said.
The weather further stated that squally weather with wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph may prevail occasionally along & off the North Odisha coast from April 7-9. Fishermen have been cautioned as sea condition is likely to be rough t
o very rough during this period.
According to the midday bulletin, a cyclonic circulation lies over Odisha & neighbourhood and another over westcentral Bay of Bengal off south coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The IMD has also issued a yellow warning for several districts for five days.
April 6
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at isolated places in the districts of Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Nabarangpur and Koraput.
Similar weather conditions with gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) also likely in Malkangiri, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda & Puri during this period.
April 7
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at isolated places in the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Bargarh & Keonjhar.
April 8
Similar weather conditions may prevail in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar & Sundargarh.
April 9
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) may occur at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore & Bhadrak.
April 10
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) may continue at isolated places in the districts of Balasore & Bhadrak.
There will be no large change in the day temperature during the next 6-7 days, it added.
