Nor’wester Rain With Gusty Wind@50Kmph Lashes Bhubaneswar, Several Districts Of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Amid the prevailing heatwave, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh and Khurda till Friday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.

There is an orange alert for light to moderate rain or thunderstorm, lightning, hail and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph for some parts of Koraput, Nabarangpur, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur and Kendrapada till 6 pm. Similar weather condition with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in Dhenkanal, Cuttack and Khurda, including twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, till 5 pm.

Yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning has also been issued for some places in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Balangir and Nuapada.  There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain at a few places in South Interior Odisha, Gajapati, Ganjam, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Puri, Khurda and at one or two places in remaining districts of the state during this period.

The MeT office further said that there will be no large change in the maximum temperature  at many places in the state during the next 5 days. “The mercury may soar to 42 degree Celsius or more at a few places in some districts of Interior Odisha – Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Jharsuguda,Bargarh – during the next 2 days. People have been advised to take precautionary measures while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm.

Till 11.30 am, Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur had recorded the highest day temperature of 39.2 degree Celsius by 11.30 am on Thursday. Jharsuguda logged 38.4 degree Celsius followed by Hirakud (37.4), Chandbali (35.6) and Keonjhar and Balasore at 35 degree Celsius each,

On Wednesday, at least 25 places saw the mercury soaring to 40 degrees Celsius and above. The day temperature breached the 42 degrees Celsius mark in at least nine places, including Bhubaneswar (42.8). Nuapada was the hottest place in the state with the mercury touching 44 degrees Celsius there, followed by Jharsuguda (43.4), Talcher (43.2), Angul (43.1) and Sambalpur (42.9). Cuttack recorded 41.6 degree Celsius.
