Bhubaneswar: Odisha may experience some relief from the sweltering heat with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting moderate thunderstorm activity with lightning, hailstorm and gusty wind in some parts for the state.
Orange warning of thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and hailstorm has been issued for one or two places in Angul, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts on Sunday. Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Sundargarh, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh and Sambalpur.
There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain/thundershower at a few places in North Odisha, Boudh, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Sonepur, Nayagarh, Puri, and at one or two places in remaining districts of the state.
Yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph continues for one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Rayagada and Kalahandi during the subsequent 24 hours. Light to moderate rain/thundershower may also occur at many places in the state.
According to weather agency, strong wind may damage plantation, horticulture and standing crops. It has also warned of partial damage to vulnerable structures due to strong winds and rain and minor damage to kutcha houses/walls and huts.
People of these districts have been advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors and avoid travelling if possible to protect from lightning and hailstorm.
