Nor’wester Soother Against Sweltering Heat In Odisha; Check Thunderstorm, Gusty Wind Alert For Today

Bhubaneswar: Southwest Monsoon is very likely to advance into some parts of South Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea and Nicobar islands during the next 2-3 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Wednesday.

While the MeT office has forecast a slight delay in arrival of monsoon over Kerala, no prediction has yet been made about its onset in Odisha.

Meanwhile, nor’wester rain coupled with thunderstorm is likely to bring much-needed relief from the sweltering heat affecting several parts of Odisha for the last 3 days. The MeT office has issued yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph for one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur for the next 24 hours. Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely to occur at one or two places in Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Dhenkanal, and Angul.

Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and at one or two places in coastal Odisha, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Boudh, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput during this period.

On Tuesday, rain and squall lashed parts of southern and coastal districts, including Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack and Khurda, lowering the temperature and providing relief from sultry weather conditions.

A trough running from North Bihar to central Chhattisgarh helped bring the nor’wester to Odisha, the weatherman said.

However, heatwave continued to prevail in interior districts and the mercury soared past 40 degree Celsius at 18 places in the state in the last 24 hours with Sambalpur being the hottest at 44.3 degree Celsius followed by Boudh, Nuapada and Balangir at 44 degree Celsius.

The IMD has forecast no large change in the day temperature during the next 4 days and the maximum temperature is some places in interior districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Angul, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh and Kalahandi is likely to be 42 degree Celsius or more. People have been advised to take precautionary measure while going outside between 11 am and 3 pm.
