Jharsuguda: A notorious criminal was injured during an exchange of fire with police while attempting a robbery at a village in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district on Saturday.
The criminal, identified as Jay Chauhan, was injured after being shot in the right leg during t
he encounter near Rengali village in Lakhanpur area of the district. He was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) at Jharsuguda for treatment.
Sources said Chauhan, who is a resident of Gandhi Chowk in Brajrajnagar, was planning a major armed robbery along with his accomplices.
Acting on specific intelligence, a special police team conducted a raid at the location. On seeing the police personnel, the criminals attempted to flee and opened fire. In self-defence, the police team also opened fire and Chauhan sustained a bullet injury to his right leg during the encounter that ensued. He collapsed on the spot, while his accomplices managed to escape from the encounter site.
Police said Chauhan is a habitual offender with more than 10 serious criminal cases registered against him in various police stations, including attempt to murder, dacoity, extortion, and violations under the Arms Act.
