Berhampur: A day after ceiling slabs collapsed on its fifth floor, chunks of concrete fell from the ceiling of the third floor at MKCG Medical College and Hospital’s super-speciality block at Berhampur in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Friday.
According to sources, the incident took place at the Endocrinology department. Though some patients were present in the room, the concrete fell on the side opposite their beds. Coincidentally, they were shifted to other beds for treatment after the concrete was found hanging.
“We were present in the room when early this morning the ceiling collapsed, but no patient was hurt,” a patient’s relative told the local media.
They, however, said that the repeated incidents have created panic among the patients. “We are afraid since such incidents are taking place intermittently. The doctors have been supportive and continuing with the treatment.”
Panic gripped patients on other floors of the block after they heard a loud crashing sound on Thursday when several slabs from the ceiling on the fifth floor came crashing down. The floor was closed for renovation since the fire mishap less than a fortnight back.
On August 26, a fire had broken out in the OT of the Urology department reportedly due to an electrical short circuit. The fifth floor houses the operation theatres (OTs) of the Urology and Plastic Surgery departments besides the Cath lab.
These incidents have raised questions about the quality of construction works carried out in the building.
Thursday also saw BJP workers staging a dharna in front of the hospital over the issue even as hospital authorities, including the dean of MKCG, took stock of the situation.
