New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra has got into trouble again.
Delhi Police on Sunday registered an FIR against the firebrand MP from Krishnanagar for a ‘derogatory’ social media post against National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma.
Moitra has been booked under Section 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of woman) under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) from July 1.
The FIR was lodged after the NCW chief filed a complaint against Moitra who reacted to a video featuring Sharma’s visit to Hathras where a stampede at a religious event on July 2 killed 121 people.
The video on social media platform X showed Sharma walking with her hands free as someone held an umbrella for her.
Many found it to be an ‘insensitive’ act.
“She is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas,” Moitra wrote is response to the video.
Calling it ‘crude and outrageous,’ NCW stated: “The remarks are a violation of a woman’s right to dignity. The Commission observed that this remark attracts Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023.”
Undeterred, Moitra dared Delhi Police to take ‘immediate’ action against her on these ‘suo moto orders.’ “(I) Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella,” the Lok Sabha MP said.
Moitra was expelled from Lok Sabha last year in the cash-for-query case.
But she returned to Parliament after winning another term as MP from Krishnanagar.
