At Apple’s first virtual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company revealed a new digital key that will turn any iPhone into a car key, apart from launching iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and watch OS 7.
The new CarKey feature will allow iPhone users to unlock and lock cars using NFC. It will be available in iOS 13 and the new iOS 14. The 2021 BMW 5 series will be the first car to feature this.
Car owners will be able to share access codes with up to 5 friends including a configurable car access option for young drivers which restricts top speed, horse power, maximum radio volume and more.
The access management can be done from inside the car as well as through Apple Wallet.
BMW has announced that this Digital Key for iPhone will be made available in 45 countries, and on the 1 Seires, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 8 Series, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M and Z4 manufactured after July 1, 2020.
