Nabarangpur: A 21-year-old second-year BSc nursing student of Raighar block in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district was shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar in a critical condition on Wednesday.
She arrived at the hospital in the state capital at 4.30 this morning and was admitted to the ICU. Her condition continues to remain critical, according to family members.
The woman has been battling for life after consuming poison on July 17 following months of alleged mental and physical torture by a spurned lover, who later circulated her private photos on social media.
Nabarangpur Chief District Medical Officer, Santosh Panda, stated that she was shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar as her condition was deteriorating rapidly. The administration is providing full support to the victim and her family, he added.
Arrests
Meanwhile, police have arrested a male friend of the victim, Uddharba Gadanayak, who was seen in the viral images, and Satyajit Sarkar, the key accused behind the leak.
Satyajit, a 23-year-old student of agricultural science in a Bhubaneswar-based college, was arrested from a bus near Dasapalla in Nayagarh district last night. He is a resident of Gursingha village in Raighar. Uddharba, who works as a guard in Jeypore district headquarters hospital (DHH), was apprehended from Jeypore.
Umerkote police had formed a special team to apprehend the accused.
Satyajit was reportedly in love with her, which went unrequited, prompting the harassment.
The victim was a BSc student in Jeypore town of Koraput and staying in a hostel.
The sequence of events
On July 13, Satyajit allegedly assaulted the woman at a market in Jeypore, resulting in facial injuries and swollen eyes.
She filed a complaint with Jeypore Town police, leading to Satyajit’s arrest and subsequent release on conditional bail.
Devastated by the attack, she returned to her village on July 15.
Unable to bear the shame and fearing injustice, the woman tried to end her life by consuming poison on July 17.
Her family rushed her to Umerkote sub-divisional hospital, but as her condition worsened, she was transferred to Kondagaon DHH in Chhattisgarh and later to a private hospital in Raipur.
With no improvement in her condition, doctors on July 21 advised her family to take her home, citing no hope for survival.
On July 21, her family filed another complaint against Satyajit.
On July 22, Raighar police recorded her statement, and she was taken to Umerkote hospital and then Nabarangpur DHH.
