Bhubaneswar: Odia feature film ‘Adieu GODARD’, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Amartya Bhattacharyya, is all set to hit theatres early next month.

It will be released in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on September 2 and in Kolkata and Mumbai on September 9. The poster of the film was released on August 18.

The film has been produced under the banner of Odisha-based production company Swastik Arthouse, in association with Kolkata-based Film Stop Entertainment and the French company Les Films de la Haute-Vallée.

Talking about the filming process, producer Swastik Choudhury said, “We shot the movie in parts because of various reasons. It took around four to five months to complete the shoot. We have taken this movie to many international festivals. Our main idea was to create something which would showcase people of a particular region who are not yet exposed to the cinema.”

The film revolves around an old man, Ananda, who is a pornography addict. He secretly watches pornography with some friends in a conservative Indian village. One day, he brings home a DVD and instead of pornography, it turns out to be one of the classics of the legendary French filmmaker Jean Luc Godard. Though his friends were disgusted, Ananda gets attracted to Godard’s film and gradually develops an obsession. He initiates the idea of hosting a film festival in their village where Godard’s films will be screened. The idea seemed quite absurd to many. Hurdling through several dramatic obstacles, they finally manage to organize the festival.

“The characters, and the activities in the movie are relatable. It revolves around a man who mistakenly watches Godard’s film and plans to conduct a film festival, which turns out as an absurd idea. The comedy and humour of the movie revolve around this central plot,” he said.

Adieu Godard features Choudhury Bikas Das in the lead, Dipanwit Dashmohapatra, Sudharsri Madhusmita, Swastik Choudhury, Choudhury Jayaprakash Das, Shankar Basu Mallick and Abhishek Giri.

At the 27th Kolkata International Film Festival, the film won the Best film in the Indian Languages competition category. Besides, it also visited the 43rd Moscow International Film Festival, 26th Split Film Festival 2021, Croatia, 26th International Film Festival of Kerala 2022, and several others.

Swastik, who has been making films for almost 10 years, said that he collaborated with Amartya Bhattacharyya, the writer, director, and cinematographer of the movie, from day one with an objective to be globally accepted and celebrate the Odia cinema industry. “I believe that Odia movies should be celebrated like any other regional language movies,” he added.
