Odia IPS Officer Amulya Patnaik’s Tenure As Delhi Police Chief Ends Tomorrow Amid Violence Criticism

It was not a farewell, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik would have liked to have! His one-month extension was clouded by allegations of police incompetence in handling a spate of violent clashes over the controversial citizenship law.

With him retiring on Saturday, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday gave IPS officer SN Shrivastava additional charge as the chief of Delhi Police until further orders. He will assume office on Sunday (March 1).
The move comes days after the 1985-batch officer of AGMUT cadre was brought from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and made Special Commissioner (Law and Order) to end the
communal clashes in north-east Delhi, which has claimed 38 lives so far.
Patnaik, also an 1985-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, was appointed as the Delhi Police Commissioner in January 2017. A native of Odisha, he is got a month’s extension on January 30 after the Election Commission extended his tenure in view of February 8 Delhi Assembly elections.
