Bhubaneswar: The director and an actor of Odia movie ‘Chhabirani’ attempted suicide in front of Naveen Niwas here on Saturday protesting the apathy of film awards jury towards cinema based on original scripts.
The movie is based on the true story of the sensational gang rape and murder of journalist Chhabirani Mohapatra in 1980.
Director Babi Islam and actor Mitu Mithun alleged that Chhabirani, which is based on an original story, was not recognised by the film’s jury while copied movies like ‘Hope’ and ‘Carry on Jatta’ received State Film Awards. However, on-duty security personnel rescued the two and handed them over to police.
The movie, produced by Manorama Mohapatra, Biren Mohapatra and Budhadev Sahu, was released on November 19, 2019.
