Odia-Owned ‘Chillika’ Climbs To Top 10 In London Suburb, Earns Top Restaurant Guru Honour

London: In a landmark moment for the Odia diaspora and the larger Indian community in the United Kingdom, Chillika in Bexleyheath has been named the most recommended restaurant for 2026 by Restaurant Guru and ranked among the top 10 eateries in the area.

Far more than a dining spot, the restaurant serves as a vibrant cultural ambassador, bridging Odisha’s heritage with the Indian diaspora and broader British audience through authentic cuisine and warm hospitality. Named after Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, Chilika Lake, it was founded by Odia entrepreneurs Subhakanta Das and Partha Sarathi Panda to showcase the distinctive tastes of Odisha while fostering a sense of home for those far from their roots.

In 2024, Chillika was officially inaugurated by Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, marking a significant milestone for the Odia community in Britain. Her presence also reinforced the importance of preserving Odisha’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage.

Das, who relocated to the UK over two decades ago as an IT professional, maintained strong ties to his homeland’s culinary traditions. What started as preparing traditional dishes for family and community events grew into a community favourite, evoking nostalgia among Odias living abroad. Panda, with a background in hospitality and business—including experience with global brands like McDonald’s and KFC, brought entrepreneurial expertise and management acu

men to the venture. Their shared passion for Odia culture and food led them to establish Chillika as a proud showcase of regional heritage.

Bound by their shared roots, entrepreneurial mindset, and passion for food, Das and Panda came together to start the journey named Chillika.

Today, Chillika functions as a “home away from home” for Odias in the UK, serving as a gathering place for students, visiting families, professionals, and community members. It is fondly called “Odisha’s Living Room in London,” where friendships are nurtured and memories of home come alive through food and ambiance. The menu emphasises authentic Odia specialities such as Dahi Bara Aloo Dum, a classic street food reminiscent of Cuttack, alongside a range of popular Indian street foods like chaats, tandoori dishes, biryanis, and goat curry in Odia style. These offerings appeal to both the Indian community and international diners seeking genuine flavours.

The restaurant has welcomed a distinguished clientele, including business leaders, cultural figures, Odia film personalities, Bollywood artistes, and social influencers. In 2025, it hosted members of the India Under-19 Cricket Team, led by young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi, underscoring its role in celebrating Indian excellence abroad.

In June 2025, Capt Arun Kar (Retd.), a British entrepreneur, investor, military veteran, and CEO of Xpertnest, joined as a strategic partner. Born in Odisha and recognised for his work in technology, innovation, and sustainable development, Capt Kar brought valuable experience in business growth and brand expansion. His decision to join Chillika was inspired by a shared belief that Odisha’s culture, cuisine, and entrepreneurial spirit deserve bigger recognition on the global stage.

From the shores of Chilika Lake to the bustling streets of London, the restaurant at 195 Broadway in Bexleyheath demonstrates how food can transcend borders, preserve heritage, and build connections. The recognition from Restaurant Guru reflects the founders’ and team’s dedication to quality, authenticity, and service.
