Odia Scientist Amiya Samal Conferred National Young Geoscientist Award

Bhubaneswar: Odia scientist Amiya Kumar Samal has been conferred with the prestigious National Young Geoscientist Award for 2022.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Geoscience Awards- 2022 (NGA) of the Ministry of Mines in a glittering function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi on Monday.

Twenty-two Geoscientists including working professionals and academicians from across the country received the awards grouped under three categories. Dr Samal received the National Young Geoscientist Award.

Samal is now working as an Assistant professor of Department of Geology, Institute of Science of Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Born to Jyoshnarani and Pramod Samal, Dr Amiya Samal hails from Balipadia under Balichandrapur police station in Jajpur district, sources said.

After completing his study from Kendrapada College and later Ravenshaw collage, Samal had joined as an assistant professor in Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Samal was selected for the award for his contributions in the field of igneous petrology and geochemistry in general and mafic dyke swarms of Indian shield in particular.

Samal has made significant contribution in understanding the variation of sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) below different archean cratons of the Indian shield.

The Union government prsents National Geoscience Awards to scientists across the country for outstanding contributions in the field of geosciences, mining and allied areas.

National Young Geoscientist Award is given to a person under the age of 35 who has performed exceptionally well in any field of geosciences.

Instituted in 1966, the National Geoscience Awards (NGA) is a symbol of recognition and appreciation for exceptional individuals and organizations that have demonstrated excellence, dedication and innovation in the realm of Geosciences.

The awards are presented in the field of Mineral Discovery and Exploration, Basic Geosciences, Applied Geosciences and Mining, Mineral Beneficiation and Sustainable Mineral Development.

The National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement was conferred upon Dr Om Narain Bhargava, known for his pioneering work in the Himalayas spanning over the last four decades.
