Rourkela: A 2-year-old girl child riding a two-wheeler with her parents was mowed down by a truck on National Highway-143 in Birmitrapur area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Tuesday.
According to sources, the accident occurred when Abhishek Majhi, his wife Manisha and their daughter were returning home at Keria, Jharkhand, this morning from finishing some work Vedavyas on a motorcycle. The child slipped from her mother’s lap and fell on the road after their motorcycle collided with another bike on the highway and was run over by a truck, approaching from behind. She died on the spot.
Tension prevailed in the area following the mishap as locals staged a blockade, demanding immediate action.
Stating the road had narrowed down due drainage construction along the highway, leading to frequent accident, they sought a bypass to divert heavy vehicles away from the town.
Police soon arrived at the spot and pacified the protesters.
