Rourkela: A 2-year-old girl child riding a two-wheeler with her parents was mowed down by a truck on National Highway-143 in Birmitrapur area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Tuesday.
According to sources, the accident o
ccurred when Abhishek Majhi, his wife Manisha and their daughter were returning home at Keria, Jharkhand, this morning from finishing some work Vedavyas on a motorcycle. The child slipped from her mother’s lap and fell on the road after their motorcycle collided with another bike on the highway and was run over by a truck, approaching from behind. She died on the spot.
Tension prevailed in the area following the mishap as locals staged a blockade, demanding immediate action.
Stating the road had narrowed down due drainage construction along the highway, leading to frequent accident, they sought a bypass to divert heavy vehicles away from the town.
Police soon arrived at the spot and pacified the protesters.
